Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a common but often misunderstood mental illness. Over two percent of the population live with bipolar disorder and regularly experience the condition’s extreme mood swings, alternating between intense emotional “highs” and “lows” that affect every aspect of daily life.

Dr. Sehdev is a Dallas psychiatrist at Aware Behavioral Health. He uses a customized treatment plan that considers your specific challenges, whether you already have a diagnosis or have been dealing with the symptoms of bipolar disorder on your own. SYMPTOMS OF BIPOLAR DISORDER

Bipolar disorder, previously known as manic depression, is characterized by its alternating periods of mania and depression. During a manic episode, those with bipolar disorder are likely to:

  • Experience feelings of elation.
  • Find themselves with rapid thoughts.
  • Become distracted easily.
  • Sleep less or go for days without sleeping.
  • Act impulsively and overconfident.

During depressive episodes, the symptoms share many of the same qualities of clinical depression, including:

  • Feelings of sadness or emptiness.
  • Loss of interest in usual enjoyments.
  • Fatigue, lethargy, and increased sleep.
  • Withdrawing from social pursuits.
  • Memory challenges.
  • Thoughts of suicide.

The symptoms and ways those with bipolar disorder experience it can vary from person to person. Many of the common symptoms can indicate other mental health challenges as well. At Aware Behavioral Health, we can provide an accurate diagnosis and corresponding treatment whether you are suffering from bipolar disorder or another mental illness.
